Over the last six months, Thailand has reached the headlines across the globe. In November 2008, the “Yellow Shirts” held the International Airport at Bangkok under siege, and over the last few weeks, the country has faced another national emergency, when the “Red Shirts” decided to fight back with their protests in Bangkok. Yet, in many areas of Thailand, all seems peaceful and quiet, and there are no signs of these political protests. No sign that is, apart from the concern and worry of the locals, and the quieter bars, restaurants and hotels.

The issues behind these protests are complex, but to put it as plainly as possible:

Travel Koh Lanta

The Yellow Shirts (also known as The People’s Alliance for Democracy or Pads), agree with the understanding of democracy, but also feel that population need to have some comprehension of the long term economic, public and political consequences of their vote. They believe that Thaksin used corruption to gain the vote of the majority population of the rural regions of Northern Thailand, on the lead up to the 2001 elections that made him prime minister.

Is it Safe to travel to Thailand?

The Red Shirts, however, see Thaksin more as a Robin Hood character, who took from the rich and gave to the poor. They believe they would be financially better off both in the short term and the long term under the rule of Thaksin. Now, Thaksin faces corruption charges, and an unelected party and prime clergyman are ruling their country. As a result, they feel cheated.

Who is right and who is wrong is not for discussion here. We are currently more concerned with the impact these struggles could have on the economy of Thailand and on the whole of tourists who want to visit. When the first major protests began in November 2008, many holidaymakers cancelled their trip, and having just recovered from the impact of the Tsunami, many businesses in the tourism commerce of Thailand faced yet another season of lowering traveler numbers. The fallout from this is wide spread. Entire families rely on the wage delivered by tourism to survive.

As such a high proportion of the population in the traveler hotspots of Thailand survive on the wage of tourism alone, the majority of the locals in these places want nothing but a peaceful resolution. They want foreigners to continue to regard Thailand as The Land of Smiles.

Whilst no one wishes to encourage you to walk into the middle of a conflict, I’m sure I’m speaking for the large majority when I ask you to think the real impact of these struggles on your visit to Thailand. Neither the Reds nor the Yellows have an issue with tourists or expats, but if you are concerned about the new troubles in Bangkok, I would like to highlight that you do not need to fly to Bangkok if you wish to visit Thailand. You can fly from Kuala Lumpur to Krabi, or fly direct into Phuket. From there you can go level to your final holiday destination, where a warm welcome and a peaceful climate awaits – just as tourists have grown to expect from Thailand – The Land of Smiles.

Most habitancy spend a few days in the Thai capital, but many find the pollution, traffic congestion and chaotic street life very wearing. There’s plenty to take you off the street, however, including the glittering Grand Palace composition and its gorgeous massive Reclining Buddha; the comprehensively stocked National Museum; the massive Chatuchak weekend market; with over eight thousand distinct nightlife that suns the full range from cutting-edge clubs to depressing strip joints.

Trekking In Kanchanaburi

Beaches

What Are Thailand’s Main traveler Attractions and Activities?

Thailand’s beaches are among the world’s best. You’ll find the most developed and costly resorts, and some of the finest sands, on the islands of Ko Samui and Phuket, while backpakers tend to head for the more budget oriented Ko Pha Ngan, Ko Tao, Ko Lanta and Ko Mook. Krabi’s Railay beaches are nothing short of stunning, Ko Samet makes and easy and frugal break from Bangkok and Ko Chang is handy for travelers heading in and out of Cambodia.

Trekking

Unlike the organized treks in the Himalayas, Thailand’s “hill-tribe treks” focus on the ethnic-minority villages that you walk to, rather than on the walking itself or the scenery. The hill tribes live way out in the sticks, but their villages are connected by tracks, so the hiking is not difficult. Most treks last two to four days and feature nights in the villages, as well as an elephant ride and river rafting. The main trekking centres are the northern cities of Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai, but routes out of both are hugely over subscribed, so it’s good to start from Mae Hing Sin, Pai, Kanchanaburi or Umphang instead, where trails are quieter and more rewarding.

The ruined old capitals of Sukhothai and Ayutthaya

Dating from the thirteen century, Sukhothai is a gorgeous example og thoughtful city planning enlivened by lakes and elegant statues of the Buddha. The 300-year-old temples and palaces of Ayutthaya display a refined mix of Hindu and Buddhist model and are fun to contemplate by bicycle. Both sets of ruins are now conserved as historical parks. There are plenty of sobering World War Ii sights in the town, as well as cheap range of trekking, rafting and cycle options that make the most or the fine river scenery, plus some sharp rafthouse room too.

Kanchanaburi

Sited on the banks of the River Kwai, the town is most preponderant for its role as a Pow camp in World War Ii and for its bridge, whose destruction by the Allied forces was immortalized in Davis Lean’s movie. There are plenty of sobering World War Ii sights in the town, as well as a cheap range of trekking, rafting and cycling options that make the most of the fine river scenery, plus some sharp rafthouse room too

Khao Sok National Park

Here you can sleep in a tree house under limestone karst, wake to the sound ogf the hooting gibbons, and take an adventure tour via waterlogged caves and jungles trails to a lake

The ancient Khmer temple of Phanom Rung

This perfect pink sandstone complex was built in the tenth century as a blueprint for the Angkor temples across the border in Cambodia

Thai massage

Enjoy a original massage at Bangkok’s Wat Pho temple, then learn the techniques yourself at a procedure in Bangkok or Chiang Mai.

Snorkelling and diving off the remote Similan Island

The turquoise water, powdery sands and banks of coral are ordinarily visited by sharks, rays and turtles

The Mae Hong Song loop

Hire a motor bike and spend as many days as you can spare on the circular 600-kilometre route through the glorious upland landscape of the remote northwest

Kayaking along the Krabi coastline

An exhilarating way of exploring the spectacularly craggy outcrops and remote uninhabited islands of the south west-coast

Sang Khom

It’s great to just chill out in this idyllis tree-shaded slight town on the Mekong river, where you can hire bicycles to visit original local villages and mess about on the water in inner tubes and dugout canoes

Pai

This laid back north-Thai town has a inevitable New Age air and is the perfect place to take some courses in alternative therapies, browse the art shops and dispose a trek.

Full-moon beach party

Join the hordes for the monthly full-moon parties on Ko Pha Ngan, an infamous back-packers’ beach rave attracts up to 30,000 clubbers.

The beaches of Thailand are among the more exotic in the world. Visitors and locals agree that these beaches have something unique, which is distinct from others and leave nothing to be desired. Detailed in this record are some of the Thailand beaches considered as the most beautiful of this country. They offer the best panoramic view to visitors and the landscape that you just can’t imagine.

Getting To Railay

Phuket Thailand – Phuket is an idyllic beach destination and among the top choices when traveling to Thailand. This place is a limited more crowded compared to other beaches I’ll mention in this article. It is a great place for diving and also has some of the clearest warm waters in the whole world. With its 540 quadrilateral kilometers of land area and a estimate of sandy beaches, Phuket is unique and captivating destination to explore. The rich culture, beautiful coastline, spectacular natural beauty, loads of sports, shopping, nightlife and dining room are just some of its attractions. Just off-shore are dozens of smaller islands that are literally reached in a few hours by boat. It is believed that the natural wonders of this continent are said to be found nearby Phuket.

Perhaps the most renowned tourist area in Phuket is Patong Beach Central West Coast. The beach here is large and long with most of Phuket’s nightlife and cheap shopping area settled in Patong which has led to the area becoming progressively more developed. In Thailand, Patong means “the forest filled with banana leaves”. Other favorite beaches that are settled south of Patong are: Karon Beach, Kata Beach, Kata Noi Beach, Nai Harn Beach, Rawai, Kamala Beach, Surin Beach and Bang Tao Beach.

Khao Lak – Khao Lak, a seaside resort in Thailand, which is a starting point for excursions to scuba diving cruises to the Similan and Surin islands. With the park’s pristine reefs, it is considered one of the most renowned dive sites in the world, also affording some of the best snorkeling in Thailand. What separates Khao Lak from its neighboring tourist destinations like Phuket, is its privacy and seclusion. With the absence of the overcrowded tourists, a nightlife that is friendly for families and the provincial ordinance prohibiting infrastructures to be built above the height of a coconut tree (although more or less), holding Khao Lak’s attractiveness naturally.

West Raily – West Raily Thailand beach is a site considered as a diamond-in-the-rough. The sand is white and milky, while the water is very clear. Also fishing, diving is a very favorite sport here. This place is accessible by long-tail boat only, so expect and put in order for a long ride. Be amazed by its beautiful White Sand Beaches, soaring limestone cliffs, viewpoints, caves and private lagoons within the reefs, shaped and fed by how the tides are changing. All within walking distance.

At Railay there are no roads, just trails. Also absent are buses and cars. Ready communication in and nearby are the long-tail boats. In Krabi, you can find limestone headlands and steep jungle valleys in which the only access is by sea. Experience the feeling of being in a tropical paradise, with no roads, no buses, the clean Railay offers lazy days as well as an adventure you will never forget and an evening to chill out. Thanks to beautiful limestone rocks and cliffs, Railay is an epic trip destination. Reconsider the numerous off-shore tropical island destinations with discrete accommodations. Most of the mid-range hotels are settled in Ao Nang.

Phi Phi Don – Phi Phi Don, Thailand is last but not the least among all the magnificent beaches I mention above. Phi Phi may be the better known beach and is a favorite of the rich and renowned and those who want to be. You should visit this beach, because the view is astounding and the water is warm and inviting. Exploring Phi Phi is great fun, with diving, snorkeling, canoeing or climbing, whenever you want to take a break from the velvety soft sand.

Don’t forget your camera! Only a short 45 minutes from Phuket will transport you to a tropical paradise and the renowned islands of Koh Phi Phi. Every view is a Kodak moment. It’s the ultimate tropical getaway in Thailand with fine, White Sand Beaches and astounding rock formations rising vivid, turquoise blue nearby the islands. You’ll know you’ve arrived in paradise.

Visitors to Thailand will study the truly exotic. Beaches galore with full accommodations, adventure excursions, night-life and sight-seeing. All that is required is your favorite beach bag for your towel and sunscreen.

travel is the best form of education. As Francis Bacon has said “travel, in the younger sort, is a part of education; in the elder, a part of experience.”

Travel & Dinner Cruise

Travel is the means straight through which man is able to liberate himself from the trivial anxieties of this world. Which oppress him to no end. It enables him to transcend straight through his mechanical existence and be exposed to the wonders, excitement and novelties of this world.

If it had not been for travel and man’s insatiable curiosity, man would never have been able to spread his civilisation in all the parts of the globe. Christopher Columbus’s yearning to know what lies ahead of the Pacific landed him up in America; Vasco De Gamma’s curiosity to know what is on the other end brought him to India.

Last but not the least it was Ibn Batuta’s joy for travel and his desire to see the world that made it potential for him to become the first medieval tourist to have visited the lands of every Muslim ruler of his time. It was the work and travel of these great explorers that we have been made aware of the existence of these places.

Travel educates a man by bringing him to terms with the ground realities of life. It broadens the outlook of habitancy and clears the incompatibility in the middle of urban and suburban lifestyles. For instance, if one would take a trip to coastal America and then to the Midwest one would perceive a wide incompatibility in the middle of the two lifestyles.

Even in Pakistan if one would head towards Muzaffarabad in Azad Kashmir, one would seriously be shocked. easily one incompatibility is of the terrain; but being in an undeveloped surrounding, one would think that there is more insecurity in those areas than in Karachi, however, one is easily mistaken for those areas are safer than large cities. Shocking, yet a fact! I would never have realised this if I had traveled; hence I now believe that travel is the best form of education. Apart from this, travel also gives a someone first hand data of the habitancy living in different countries.

Although, now with advancements in technology, the television and Internet fulfill this task quite effectively yet sometimes its make reliance reality oppresses us. Personally witnessing the location, meeting the populous and eating the local food has its own charisma and most importantly a lesson, sometimes accompanied with an adventure.

However, some habitancy consider travel to be a waste of time rather than a mode of education. They are drastically in incompatibility to those who find inner peace, tranquility, recreation, enjoyment, health and fitness in traveling. These habitancy would rather be engrossed in their own hectic lives than take a break and sink into the majestic charm of God’s creation. For such people, the statement of Robert Louis Stevenson truly befits; “For my part, I travel not to go everywhere but to go, I travel for travel‘s sake. The great affair is to move.

The Origin of Wisdom, Spirit and Craftsmanship

Getting To Sukhothai

Introduction

From the old days until now, Thai habitancy have the culture of crafting silver into silverware for several purposes. For example, religious objects, jewellery or household utensils. Archeological evidence indicates that silver has been used since Dvaravati, Sukhothai, Lanna, and Ayudhya until Rattanakosin period. Descendants like us thus having an opening to inherit the wisdom of turning critical metal into life-blessing objects and the sophisticated craftsmanship. Though old evidence suggests that silverware was used only among members of the royal family, noblemen and the rich, from the late Rattanakosin period until now habitancy have widely used silver in creating artwork and designing assorted kinds of products. This study narrative will show an aesthetical perspective of the habitancy in the old days. It is aimed at reflecting the gorgeous ways of living in harmony with objects. Readers might then realise the significance of silverware as national treasure and, therefore, support this origin of wisdom, spirit and craftsmanship.

The First Knowledge: The Origin of Wisdom

As mentioned earlier, we might divide the purpose of silverware usage into 2 categories. One is to originate jewellery, household utensils or everyday arts. The other is for scientific purpose e.g. Part of chemical elements. The narrative will mention only the first purpose. This is because it is concerned with the aesthetical wisdom of Thai culture which is dissimilar from materialisation in this globalised society.

We could assume from the archeological evidence that Thai habitancy not only consume jewellery, household utensils and art for daily usage. But, these objects are full of meanings which show intellectual integration. Example can be seen from the discovery of silver coins from Dvaravati period at Tambon Prapatone, Nakornpatom. One side of the coin engraved the picture of “Puranakalasa,” a vase with flowers symbolises prosperity, and the other Palsa Dynasty’s Sansakrit saying “Sridvaravatisavarabhunya,” which means the merit of Sridvaravati’s king (Nangnoi, 1991, P.15). This was to all the time remind the habitancy of the king’s generosity. Other example is a bangle from northern part of Thailand. The silver bangle in horseshoe shape called “Jiang money” could also be traded for things.

Silver is also cleverly used as signs, symbols and insignia of rank. In the Tra Sam Duang Law, the first enacted Thai law in the reign of King Boromatrilokanart, it is written that;

Governors of 20 cities must deliver silver and gold flowers. Silver tray with black niello was the insignia of rank for noblemen with 10,000 rais of land. In some royal ceremonies, 9, 7, 6, 5, 3, 2 and 1 level of tiered umbrellas were set imitating bloomed lotus. There were silver, gold, and silver and copper umbrellas. Governmental officials were paid in silver, gold, and silver and copper. (Fraser, 1989, P.36)

“Japing,” a shield used to cover girls’ secret parts, also demonstrates cleverness of the habitancy in the old days. This is because kids did not wear clothes in the previous time. Though Japing could be made of several materials such as coconut shell, silver Japing had the most value because of the nature of silver and the design. Silver could be forged into small rings associated together. Unlike Japing made of other materials, silver Japing did not rust or forestall air flowing. These evidences show the wisdom of our ancestors in manufacture silver worth more than its basic qualifications; 100% pure and gleaming metal with specific gravity of 10.5. Silver can be found as an element of lead, zinc, copper or sterling silver. Silver is also the best conductor. It resists to alkaline and acid. Silver is phenomenal metal which can be moulded into 3 dimensional objects straight through assorted methods, either by tapping, spreading, carving, bending etc. Looking at silver in this way is a part of cultural process which renders us Thai habitancy artistic and unique jewellery, household utensils and artworks.

The Second Knowledge: The Origin of Spirit

Jewellery, household utensils or artworks have been forms of inner mind expression before verbal language. Thai habitancy have been carving silver for more than 10,000 years. Silver tradition has been retained in the form of symbols. These symbols were associated to objects which tell the story of faith. We found that the jewellery, household utensils and artworks have embraced cultural context, value and spiritual images. They also show “public” aiming at uniting Thai community.

An example of the above mentioned aim can be seen from historical society before the time of Buddhism. Necklace, bangle and coins made from shell, bones or silver were found in both men and women graves. Anthropologists point out the reckon jewellery was all the time buried with the dead is because death might be a form of life continuity. Similar to Buddhist belief, habitancy in the old days believed that spirits will be reborn. They would then take with them to the next life the jewellery and household utensils. (Fine Arts Department, 1992, P. 37, 42) another example is the strong faith of Buddhists towards the Triple Gem; Buddha, Dharma and Sangha. The Buddhists express their faith straight through Buddhist art.

The size of silver forming Buddha images is no more than 6 inches. Buddha images of 4 or 5 inches height are normally found in temples straight through northern part of Thailand. In the old days, habitancy in the north believed that “If you resolve to enter monkshood but fail to do so, building Buddha image would receive the same merits as going under monkshood.” Daughters of decent families all the time followed the trust because women are not allowed to enter monkshood. Sons with disabilities also did their offering this way. (Nangnoi, 1991, P. 50) In war time, men carried with them jewellery as talisman. They believed that the jewellery would forestall them from danger and safe them. We may close that the origin of spirit leads to creation of objects to serve individual needs. They act as medium in fulfilling one’s spirit.

The Third Knowledge: The Origin of Craftsmanship

Silver can be created straight through assorted processes, from basic to complicated process. The process of creating jewellery, household utensils or artworks has many steps. All the steps lead to gorgeous artistic images. But, only foremost processes will be explained here.

There are 3 main procedures in order to originate any goods from silver: forging, forming and decorating.

1. Forging is putting silver beads or coins into a mould. Melt it with heat and pour into a forming mould.

2. Forming This can be done in many ways, for example, carving, hammering, tapping, lining or ironing into sheet. After the pieces of silver will be soldered by “blowing,” using borax and soldering flux, or other methods such as weaving, sheathing.

3. Decorating Similar to forming, decorating can be done in assorted ways. Embossing, carving, using polisher paper etc. Can be used to decorate surface. Other materials used in decorating silverware are amniotic fluid, niello, gem or enamel.

Craftsmen, artists or designers should all the time study the above procedures in order to form their skills. Knowing only system would not lead to gorgeous work of art. Therefore, we need to institution and verbalize these skills given to us by our ancestors. Apart from that, we shall adjust and adapt these procedures to our modernised society on the basis of the old principles.

Conclusion: Integration of the Three Origins Leads to Sustainability

Nowadays, our society and culture are lead by economic direction. Money is the indicator of good condition of living. Using silver to originate delicate and sophisticate jewellery, household utensils or artworks has become time wasting process, old-fashioned and contradict to economic growth. Lots of craftsmen and artists thus abandon this job and stop passing on the knowledge. Damage caused by this may not be seen today. But, if we continue neglecting, we may ultimately lose our cultural uniqueness and become another prey of cultural colonialism.

This study narrative is thought about to distribute cultural knowledge to readers, especially those directly associated to the issue. We wish to urge them to, once again, support this aesthetic heritage and sophisticate craftsmanship. Thai habitancy would then be able to verbalize our national identity agreeing true Buddhist culture.
